No matter what my career threw at me, I always made time for working out and eating well. I even trained for my second marathon while working three jobs seven days per week, and never missed a training session. So when I began traveling for work, I thought staying fit on the road would be a piece of cake.

Easy, right?

I saw other consulting colleagues' health crumble due to stress, horrible airport food, lack of sleep, and weight gain. But I was convinced that wasn’t going to happen to me. So before my first business trip, I spent over an hour on TripAdvisor viewing hotel fitness room photos to make sure I found one that would suit my needs. Needless to say, after all of the time spent doing that and with all of the real work I still had to do, meal planning went straight out the window.

Travel fatigue and decision fatigue: The struggle is real!

Fitting in a decent workout was easy for me to a point, but I found that the hotel gyms often fell short of their photos. And while I usually began my work travel with a healthy breakfast and a small snack, a flurry of meetings, deadlines and tight schedules combined with zero planning, travel fatigue and decision fatigue produced a perfect storm. Before long, that energy would turn to exhaustion, and I would eat anything that crossed my path. (And after a few trips like this, it showed!)

After one particular travel week filled with endless meetings, room service, catered lunches, and conference socializing, I remember sitting on a plane at LaGuardia feeling tired, defeated, and out of tune with my body. “Man, I wish I would have planned that all better,” I said to myself. “But I just don’t have the time!”

Well now I have the time. And I want to give that time to you.
